User with restricted forward flexion of trunk

The user highlighted within this case study has significantly reduced forward flexion of her trunk due to body mass. The user was able to independently self propel minimal distances in her home and wished complete transfers without assistance.

Issue Highlighted

At present she required assistance to complete a safe standing transfer as she was unable to reach and locate the brake release mechanism on both the standard and swing away footplates to allow them to be cleared for transfers.

Solution Designed

A flat soft touch button was attached to the release catch of the standard footplate via a covered cable running through the hanger bracket. This allowed the release mechanism to be operated at by pulling the button upwards. At rest position the button sits at canvas height and within easy reach of the user. The use of a flat soft touch button allows the user to fully reposition and secure the footplate hanger via its normal push down operation.
